They should be Outgoing and Confident, friendly, courageous & intelligent. Alert at all times, not aggressive but fearless.
The exact beginning of the Airedale Terrier is difficult to determine date wise but it is known that around the early 1800's the Miners and and working men of Yorkshire were very keen dog men often to be found with a small Black & Tan Broken Haired terrier by their side.
These were often used for Ratting down by the banks of the River Aire, which in later times helped to form the name of AIREDALE.
As to what went into making the Airedale that we now know today, no one can be exact as very little was put on paper. What has been determined is that the Otterhound played an importent role as well as several other possible Terriers.
Since that time our friend the Airedale Terrier has never looked back, although at the time he was known as the Bingley or Waterside Terrier
Coming into the 20th Century, he really came into his own. Known as the first Police Dog in this Country, used in the Trenches of the First World War, for sentry duty, sending messages, running phone lines, and many other duties. Over three thousand Airedales were used in active Duty.
The Airedale that we have today is mainly a Family Pet/ Companion, although has certainly made and still does make his mark in the Show Ring
Not a Fireside dog content with a short walk, likes to be active makes the perfect family member while the instinct to Guard and Hunt is still retained
